Raphael is apprenticed to the renowned violin maker Nicolo Amati but secretly dreams of becoming a musician. One night, after sweeping up the sawdust in the workshop, Raphael reaches up and, like a ripe apple, plucks a violin from its hook. Then he begins to play.

The story takes place in Cremona three hundred years ago and explores the beauty and mystery of the violin.
